3rd Annual Skate with Daniel raises $85,511
Proceeds to support brain tumour research
THORNHILL – The third annual Skate with Daniel took place on Saturday, May 23, 2009 at the Thornhill Community Centre West Arena. Funds raised go to support the Daniel Bertoia Family Fund and b.r.a.i.n.child, the Hospital for Sick Children Foundation for brain tumour research.
The event included 7 hockey games with over 210 players each wearing no. 11, Daniel's number. Various fundraising activities such as a balloon pops, an amazing silent auction and other fun events were held. Skate with Daniel is supported by the NHL Alumni and the National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA). Several celebrities attended the event and were on hand to sign autographs including actor Nick Mancuso, Andrew Cogliano from the Edmonton Oilers, Anthony Peluso, draft pick for the St. Louis Blues, and NHL Toronto maple Leaf Alumni, Bill Derlago and Lou Francheschetti, who also played hockey in one of the games.
"The b.r.a.i.n.child fundraiser Skate with Daniel is held for a tremendous cause, and the NHLPA is proud to be associated with this great event in honour of Daniel Bertoia," said Glenn Healy, NHLPA Director of Player Affairs.
The third annual Skate with Daniel event has grown substantially, and raised over $85,511 for brain tumour research.
"This year's 23 person committee co-chaired by Jennifer Goffenberg and Sebastian Fuschini was awesome. Thank you to everyone who was involved and those who came out to show support for the event and this important cause. A special thank you to the Town of Markham staff for the assistance provided and to the media for the TV, radio and newspaper coverage. Everyone who came out this year shared in Daniel's goal to help find a cure" said Stan Bertoia.
Donations to support the Daniel Bertoia Family Fund and b.r.a.i.n.child, the Hospital for Sick Children Foundation for brain tumour research, are still being accepted. Click here to make a contribution.
